Howie Dorough and AJ McLean, both from Orlando, Florida, connected through a mutual vocal coach and later discovered Nick Carter through auditions. Realizing their harmonious potential, they formed a trio. Cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell, from Lexington, Kentucky, sang in church choirs and festivals.

Richardson moved to Orlando in 1990, working at Walt Disney World while pursuing music. In 1992, Lou Pearlman advertised for a vocal group with a "New Kids on the Block" look and "Boyz II Men" sound. McLean auditioned first, followed by Carter, Dorough, and Richardson. Littrell joined on April 20, 1993, making that their official anniversary.

Named after Orlando's Backstreet Market, the Backstreet Boys performed their debut show at SeaWorld Orlando on May 8, 1993, and continued to build a fan base through performances at malls, restaurants, and charity events.
