Ben Folds is an American singer-songwriter born on September 12, 1966, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He gained fame as the lead singer and pianist for the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five, which was active from 1993 to 2000 and reunited from 2011 to 2013. Folds has also released several solo albums, with the latest, "What Matters Most," coming out in June 2023. He has worked with various artists like Regina Spektor, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and yMusic, and has done unique projects with actor William Shatner and writers Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman.
Since May 2017, Folds has served as the first artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He often performs his music with unusual instruments for rock and pop, such as symphony orchestras and a cappella groups. Folds contributed music to animated film soundtracks like "Hoodwinked!" and "Over the Hedge," and produced Amanda Palmer's album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" in 2008. He was a judge on the NBC a cappella singing contest "The Sing-Off" from 2009 to 2013. In July 2019, he published his memoir, "A Dream About Lightning Bugs: A Life of Music and Cheap Lessons."
