Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game released on August 20, 2024. Developed and published by Game Science, it draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The game features an anthropomorphic monkey based on the character Sun Wukong from the novel.
Available on PlayStation 5 and Windows, Black Myth: Wukong has been well-received by critics. It sold 10 million copies within just a few days of release, making it one of the fastest-selling games ever. An Xbox Series X/S version is expected to come out later.
Black Myth: Wukong Plot
Black Myth: Wukong is a single-player action RPG with soulslike elements, played from a third-person perspective. You control a monkey hero inspired by Sun Wukong, using a magical staff that can change size and has three combat stances: smash, pillar, and thrust. Combat involves managing resources like focus and stamina.
You gain focus through attacks and dodges, which can be used for powerful combos or heavy attacks. Spells have cooldowns and consume mana, while transformations allow the protagonist to change into different creatures with unique abilities.
Spirits, gained from defeated enemies, provide special skills and passive effects. The game features a mostly linear path with checkpoints called keeper's shrines and challenging enemies known as yaoguai. The difficulty varies as you play, but cannot be adjusted.
Black Myth: Wukong Gameplay
In Black Myth: Wukong, the story unfolds over six chapters and has multiple endings. You play as the Destined One, a monkey hero on a quest to find lost relics. The game features real-world landmarks from China, like temples and towers.
The plot follows Sun Wukong, who, after helping Tang Sanzang and recovering Buddhist scriptures, becomes a Buddha but rejects the Celestial Court. The Court, angered by his disobedience, sends Erlang Shen to force him back. Sun Wukong is defeated, bound, and sealed in stone but manages to split his power into six Relics before being sealed.
Centuries later, the Monkeys of Mount Huaguo send young warriors to recover these Relics to revive Sun Wukong. As the Destined One, you must defeat Wukong’s stone body, leading to different possible endings based on your actions.
