Couples Therapy Season 1 Where are They Now?
Here is the current status of Couples Therapy Season 1 couples.
Evelyn and Alan
Evelyn and Alan were very different from each other. They didn't trust or appreciate each other, which almost led to their separation after six years of marriage. Evelyn's body language showed she was reserved, while Alan admitted he was more confident and liked meeting new people. Most of their therapy sessions with Dr. Orna Guralnik focused on infidelity and its impact on their relationship.
Evelyn's brief and stern responses sometimes made it seem like she wasn't interested in Alan anymore. Alan felt that nothing he did was ever enough for her, saying, "It's her, she's never happy. I don't want to do this anymore." He even got emotional and listed the things he did to help her, to which she responded with a single, tearful "yes" after a long pause. Although we can't be sure, it seems likely that Evelyn and Alan have since parted ways.
Annie and Mau
Annie and Mau's problem was different from most long-term couples who argue about money, growing apart, boredom, and kids. Their issue was their very different desires. The strange part is it started when Annie, his wife of 23 years, planned a dominatrix-themed party for his birthday to spice things up. But Mau didn’t want that; he just wanted simple intimacy, which he saw as a basic daily need, like eating or sleeping.
Mau said, "I have to do it every day. Saying you were intimate yesterday is like saying you ate yesterday. I’m glad you ate yesterday, but today is today." However, when Annie talked about her past trauma during a therapy session, Mau got upset. Despite this, they found their way back to the love that held them together. So, Annie and Mau from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are still happily married.
Lauren and Sarah
Sarah and Lauren's relationship was always a bit complicated. The main issue was deciding when to have a child. Sarah wanted to start a family soon due to their good situation and declining mental health. Lauren, however, wanted to focus on her own identity as a woman first. Despite trying therapy, their relationship ultimately didn't work out.
In July 2021, Lauren announced that she and Sarah had separated and filed for divorce after seven years together. She shared that she had gone through various stages of grief but was grateful for the adventures, growth, and fun they had together. Lauren has since moved to California. Sam, formerly known as Sarah, has come out as nonbinary.
Elaine and DeSean
After 11 years of marriage, Elaine and DeSean went to counseling with Dr. Orna Guralnik feeling frustrated because of their different personalities. Elaine described how they initially balanced each other out, but now they struggled to understand each other. Despite their genuine desire to connect, they found themselves stuck in their past experiences, which were holding them back from moving forward together.
They explored Elaine's past trauma, the impact of racism on their relationship, and did exercises to reflect on themselves and improve their communication. It seems the changes they experienced during therapy have stayed with them, suggesting they are likely still putting effort into their relationship every day. Overall, it seems they now consciously choose each other and prioritize their relationship above everything else.
