Dark and Darker
Dark and Darker is a distinctive video game that seamlessly combines dungeon crawling with PvP (Player vs. Player) and PvE (Player vs. Environment) elements. Created by Ironmace Games, it is set in a grim, medieval fantasy world where players face exhilarating battles against both monsters and other players.
The game highlights high-risk combat, resource management, and strategic decision-making, all centered around survival. Players can select from various character classes, each with unique abilities, and must traverse perilous dungeons teeming with threats and valuable treasures. With its intense, immersive atmosphere, the game offers a captivating experience for fans of the genre, blending dark visuals with challenging gameplay
Gameplay
Dark and Darker is a first-person game that fuses dungeon crawling with role-playing elements, set in a dark medieval fantasy world. Drawing from systems like Dungeons & Dragons, roguelikes, and multiplayer games like DayZ, it falls into the 'extraction' subgenre of battle royales.
Players choose from nine character classes, including fighter, wizard, and bard, and engage in PvPvE combat—battling monsters for loot while fending off other players. The environment grows increasingly perilous, forcing players to escape or perish. Surviving allows players to retain loot for future use, while death results in losing all possessions. Recent updates introduced a marketplace, gear-based matchmaking, and multiclassing.
Release Date
A demo of Dark and Darker was first released in February 2023 during Steam Next Fest as an alpha playtest. Originally expected to enter early access in April or May, its release was delayed due to a legal dispute with Nexon.
The game finally launched into early access on August 7, 2023, through Chaf Games and Ironmace’s website. Later, it was announced that Dark and Darker would be coming to mobile devices in partnership with Krafton. In 2024, the game received a 19+ rating, launched on the Epic Game Store, and introduced a free-to-play option, which faced criticism from Steam users.
