Founded in 1971, the Oilers first played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) before joining the NHL in 1979. They have won the Stanley Cup five times: in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990. This makes them one of the most successful teams since the NHL and WHA merger. The Oilers also won six consecutive division titles from 1981 to 1987 but have not won a division title since.

After a period of struggle following the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, the Oilers missed the playoffs for ten years. They have had several top draft picks, including Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, and Connor McDavid. Nugent-Hopkins and McDavid have stayed with the team, helping them reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to the Florida Panthers in seven games.
