Causes of Error Code 8012 in Dead by Daylight

Error code 8012 in "Dead by Daylight" primarily stems from server-related issues. Here are the main causes:

  • Server Outages: The most common cause is a server outage. This occurs when the game's servers are down for maintenance or are experiencing technical difficulties, making them temporarily unreachable.
  • Platform Maintenance: Maintenance on platforms like Steam, PSN, or Xbox can also trigger error code 8012. If these platforms undergo updates or maintenance, it can affect connectivity to "Dead by Daylight."
  • Update Rollouts: During the deployment of new updates or patches, the game’s online services might be briefly unavailable, resulting in error code 8012.

Cross-play and cross-progression were added to let players on different platforms play together and share progress. The game upgraded from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 in 2024.

Dead by Daylight Gameplay

Dead by Daylight is a horror game where one player is the Killer, and four players are Survivors. The goal for the Survivors is to escape by fixing five out of seven generators on the map. Fixing these generators powers up two exit gates that they can use to escape. The Killer tries to catch and hook all Survivors, so they are sacrificed to a scary being called the Entity. If only one Survivor is left, an escape hatch appears randomly. If the Killer finds and closes the hatch, or if an exit gate is opened, the Endgame Collapse starts, and any remaining Survivors will be sacrificed if they don't escape in time.

The Killer captures Survivors by either hitting them twice to put them in a dying state and then picking them up, or by surprising them while they’re working on objects like generators. Survivors can try to escape from hooks, but it’s hard. If hooked a second time, Survivors have to complete skill checks to avoid being sacrificed. Being hooked a third time means they’re sacrificed immediately.

Survivors can run, walk, crouch, or crawl to avoid the Killer. They can use obstacles like wooden pallets to temporarily stun the Killer or climb over barriers to get away. Killers have special abilities to find generators, hooks, and Survivors, and each Killer has unique powers that can be improved with add-ons.

Survivors can find or bring items like maps, keys, toolboxes, med-kits, and flashlights to help them escape. The Killer has a "terror radius," which makes a heartbeat sound and shows a red light to let Survivors know where the Killer is. Some Killers can hide these signals to surprise Survivors.
