Where Does How to Train Your Dragon Live Action Filming Take Place?
Principal photography for the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon was initially scheduled to begin in July 2023 in Belfast, Northern Ireland but was postponed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Following the resolution of the strike, screen tests were conducted in December 2023, and production officially began on January 15, 2024, wrapping up on May 16, 2024. Bill Pope served as the cinematographer for the project.
The film heavily utilized practical sets and was designed with the IMAX format in mind to enhance the visual experience. Many iconic scenes and shots from the 2010 animated film were meticulously recreated in live-action, including Hiccup's memorable first encounter with Toothless.
This approach aims to stay true to the original's storytelling and visual style while leveraging the realism of live-action filmmaking.
