Alan Jones was born to Charlie Thomas Jones (a farmer and coal miner) and Elizabeth 'Beth' Jones (a former school teacher). He was the middle of three children, with an older brother, Robert Charles, and a younger sister, Colleen, both of whom also became school teachers like their mother and Alan himself. Jones grew up on a dairy farm near Oakey, in southeast Queensland, and attended Acland State School before transferring to Toowoomba Grammar School as a boarder.

After finishing school, Jones trained as a teacher at Kelvin Grove Teachers College (now part of the Queensland University of Technology) in Brisbane.

He began his teaching career in 1961 at Ironside State School, a state primary school in Brisbane's inner suburbs. In 1963, he joined Brisbane Grammar School, a private boys' secondary school, where he worked until 1969. During this time, he pursued part-time studies at the University of Queensland and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967.

Media Career

In 1985, Alan Jones joined the Sydney AM radio station 2UE as the morning show host, taking over after long-time host John Laws moved to 2GB.

In 1988, when Laws returned to 2UE to host the morning show, Jones shifted to the breakfast slot (5:30 AM to 9:00 AM). During this transition, Jones adopted "Gloria" by Laura Branigan as the program's opening and closing theme music.

By the mid-1990s, Jones had achieved significant success, with his Sydney market audience share reaching 22%, making him the most popular radio broadcaster in Sydney.
