Mike Nolan Career
Mike Nolan started singing and playing guitar in pubs around London in the mid-1970s. He mostly sang old Irish ballads. He also tried out for different singing groups. In 1976, he joined his first serious band called Brooks. This band was created by Freya Miller, who also managed Shakin' Stevens. Brooks was a four-piece boyband with Mike, Ben Ellison, John Humphreys, and Peter Pereira. They wanted to be like The Monkees. Chris Hamill, who later became famous as Limahl, was also in the group at first. Even though they appeared on TV and in magazines, the band never had a hit song and broke up after three years.
In 1980, Nichola Martin, a composer and manager, contacted Mike. She had a song called "Making Your Mind Up," written by her boyfriend Andy Hill. She wanted to enter it into the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest. Mike and Nichola recorded a demo of the song, and it was accepted as a finalist. Nichola then started looking for other singers to form a group around Mike.
