Is the Movie Unhinged Based on a True Story?
The movie Unhinged is not based on a true story; it is a completely fictional film. The writer, Russell Crowe, mentioned that the movie was inspired by Steven Spielberg's 1971 film Duel. He explained that the main character acts like the shark in Jaws, as he is already triggered before the story begins and follows his instincts aggressively.
Crowe said that the character operates based on his natural instincts, just like a shark hunting its prey. This idea adds depth to the character, making him both frightening and relatable in his motivations. (Source: Netflix Tudum)
Unhinged Filming Locations
Unhinged was mainly filmed in Louisiana, especially in the cities of New Orleans and Kenner. One important location is the Crescent City Connection Bridge, where the characters Edward and Rachel first meet. This bridge was also used for a thrilling car chase scene. The film crew got special permission to film here, despite the bridge being a busy area.
Another key filming site is Ursuline Academy, which served as the fictional Wesley Elementary School for Rachel's son, Kyle. Additionally, some scenes were shot on Edwards Avenue, where Edward catches up to Rachel. The diner used in the movie, originally named Franny's Place Family, was renamed Darrow's Diner for the film.
Release Date
Unhinged was first set to come out on August 28, 2020, but its release date kept changing. It was moved to September 4, then pushed forward to July 1 to help theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the release was delayed again multiple times, finally landing on August 21, 2020.
The film started showing in theaters on July 16 in Germany and later released in other countries like the UK and Canada. After about two months, it was available for premium video on demand on October 20. It was also released on Blu-ray and DVD in various countries later that year .
