One scene depicts British troops burning a church with people inside, which didn't happen in the American Revolution but resembles a World War II event in Oradour-sur-Glane, France.

The film's British villain, Col. Tavington, is based on Tarleton, who was known for his ruthless tactics. While some of the movie's events are exaggerated or fictionalized, it draws on true stories of American patriots and British officers from the Revolutionary War.
