Monty Python Holy Grail Secret Lair
Just a few weeks after their Assassin’s Creed crossover, Magic: The Gathering is back with another Universes Beyond crossover, this time featuring Monty Python and The Holy Grail. This collaboration introduces two limited edition Secret Lair drops. Secret Lair X Monty Python And The Holy Grail includes ten reprints of classic Magic cards with new artwork inspired by the comedy movie.
Secret Lair is Magic’s exclusive release service that offers unique versions of cards for a limited time. These Monty Python cards will only be available while stocks last on the Secret Lair website and won't be reprinted again.
MTG cards in Monty Python Holy Grail
Cards in Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drops are chosen based on how much players want them, the resources available for coordinating artists, and the theme of each drop, according to product designer Daniel Nguyen.
Since there are two volumes for the Monty Python and the Holy Grail set, owning both might make the sealed product more valuable on the secondary market. Additionally, most individual cards are likely to become more valuable over time.
Volume 1 of Secret Lair X Monty Python And The Holy Grail includes:
- Bring Out Your Dead (Buried Alive)
- Tim The Enchanter (Prodigal Sorcerer)
- European Swallow//African Swallow (Birds Of Paradise, double-sided)
- 'Tis But A Scratch! (Dismember)
- We Want... A SHRUBBERY! (Three Visits)
These cards feature references to famous scenes from the movie, like the coconuts carried by swallows and the Black Knight’s dismemberment.
Despite their new names, these cards are treated the same as their original versions in gameplay.
Volume 2 includes:
- Castle Of Aaargh (Dark Depths)
- The Black Beast Of Aaargh (Marit Lage token)
- The Bridge Of Death (Door to Nothingness)
- Sir Bedivere's Scales (Ashnod's Altar)
This smaller drop features three cards and a token, with references like the Bridge of Death asking for King Arthur’s favorite color. These special edition cards are expected to be more expensive than regular editions due to the popularity of Monty Python.
Both volumes will be released on July 29 as part of the Stuck In An Elevator Secret Lair Super Drop. Prices have not been confirmed yet, but the release will include other drops with unique fantasy art.
Magic: The Gathering
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a card game created by Richard Garfield and released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It was the first trading card game and had about fifty million players by February 2023. From 2008 to 2016, over twenty billion Magic cards were made, and the game became very popular. As of 2022, MTG makes over $1 billion each year.
In the game, players are wizards called Planeswalkers who use magical spells to battle each other. Cards can represent one-time spells (Instant and Sorcery cards) or long-term effects (Creature, Artifact, Enchantment, and Battle cards). Players need Land cards to get mana, which they use to cast spells. The main goal is to reduce the opponent's life points to zero, often by attacking with creatures, though there are other ways to win too.
MTG has a lot of cards and complex rules, different from games like Dungeons & Dragons. It can be played in person with physical cards or online with digital cards. There are different ways to play, including building a deck from random cards (Limited) or using cards you own (Constructed). New cards come out regularly, and there are big events and tournaments for players. Some cards are rare and can be worth a lot of money, from a few cents to thousands of dollars.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is a British comedy film from 1975. It makes fun of the legend of King Arthur and the quest for the Holy Grail. The movie was written and performed by the Monty Python comedy group, which includes Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Gilliam and Jones also directed the film. Unlike their first movie, which was a collection of TV sketches, "Holy Grail" has an original story. The film was very successful, becoming the highest-grossing British film in the US in 1975. It inspired the Tony Award-winning musical "Spamalot" in 2005. "Holy Grail" is considered one of the best comedies of all time, ranking high in various polls.
