What is the Purple Cap in IPL?
The Purple Cap, now called the Aramco Purple Cap due to sponsorship, is awarded to the IPL's top wicket-taker. It was introduced on May 13, 2008, shortly after the Orange Cap. Throughout the season, the bowler with the most wickets wears it while fielding, and the overall leading wicket-taker receives the award at the end of the season's final match. In a tie, the bowler with the better economy rate gets the cap.
Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo have won it twice. Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel took 32 wickets each in the 2013 and 2021 IPL, respectively, the highest in a single season, but Dwayne Bravo leads due to his superior economy rate. IPL chairman Lalit Modi emphasized the importance of bowlers in T20 cricket, stating that they play a crucial role in winning matches, just like batsmen.
