Othello

Othello is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1603. The full title is The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice. The story takes place in Venice and Cyprus, where Othello, a Moorish military commander, is tricked by his assistant, Iago, into believing that his wife, Desdemona, is being unfaithful.

This play is considered one of Shakespeare's greatest works, along with other famous tragedies like Macbeth, King Lear, and Hamlet. It was first printed after Shakespeare’s death in 1622. Over time, Othello has remained very popular on stage and has been adapted into films and operas. The roles of Othello, Iago, Desdemona, and sometimes Emilia (Iago’s wife) are seen as challenging and important for actors.

A lot of focus has been given to the themes of race, jealousy, and Iago’s manipulation of Othello. Originally, white actors wore dark makeup to play Othello, but starting in the 19th century, black actors began taking on the role. The play’s story was inspired by a novella written by Cinthio, but Shakespeare added many unique elements. Though not the longest play, Othello includes two of Shakespeare’s longest roles: Othello and Iago.
