Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, also called Ringling Bros. Circus or simply Ringling, is known as The Greatest Show on Earth. It started in 1871 but took a break from 2017 to 2023. The circus began in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey Circus, created by P.T.
Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, joined with the Ringling Bros. Circus.
The Ringling brothers bought Barnum & Bailey in 1907 but kept them separate until they merged in 1919. After 1957, the circus stopped using its big tents and started performing in stadiums and arenas. In 1967, Irvin Feld and his brother bought the circus, then sold it to Mattel in 1971, only to buy it back in 1981.
Since Irvin Feld passed away in 1984, the circus has been part of Feld Entertainment. In May 2017, the circus closed due to low attendance and high costs. It returned in fall 2023 without animals.
