Serpent Queen Episode 3 Recap
In Episode 3 of "Serpent Queen,” titled "Death of a Prince," Minnie Driver's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I steals the show with her dynamic and captivating performance. Elizabeth's arrival brings a much-needed spark to the series, overshadowing the tired Guise vs. Bourbon rivalry.
Catherine faces dire challenges as the French Protestants, who survived François' assassination attempt, revolt. They're attacking cathedrals, killing monks, and looting church treasures while hailing Sister Edith as a saint. Edith demands justice from the monarchy and refuses to back down, despite Montmorency's pleas. Her behavior takes a cult-like turn, threatening punishment for disobedience within her ranks.
Anjou, known for his harsh tactics, suggests executing random peasants to instill fear, showcasing his ruthless and insecure nature. Despite the influence of Diane, who is adored by Catherine's children, Anjou's erratic behavior persists.
In Italy, Catherine visits Florence to secure a loan but dreads the memories of her childhood. She unexpectedly encounters her half-brother, Alessandro de’ Medici, sparking both excitement and apprehension. Their meeting delays her return to France, adding a new layer of complexity to her journey.
The episode also marks the return of Mary, Queen of Scots, imprisoned in England for eleven years. Elizabeth's meeting with Mary defies historical accuracy but delivers a delightful confrontation. Elizabeth’s witty and sharp demeanor contrasts with Mary's naive claims, reinforcing Elizabeth's dominance.
Elizabeth's political maneuvers aim to exploit France's religious turmoil, seeking an advantage in trade negotiations. Her ruthless plan underscores the brutal reality of monarchical power struggles.
The episode closes on a troubling note, with Anjou committing another murder, raising concerns about the show's depiction of violence among queer characters. Despite these issues, the episode's highlights include Elizabeth's scenes, which bring a refreshing energy to the series. (Source: Vulture)
