Why was David Sweat in Prison?
In 1997, when David Sweat was 17, he was sentenced by Broome County Judge Martin E. Smith to two to four years in prison for felony attempted burglary, serving 19 months. Prior to this, Sweat and a friend had devised a plan to steal computers and cash from a youth-group home in Binghamton, which involved tying up a woman and locking her in a storage room.
While incarcerated at Clinton Correctional Facility, Sweat met Richard Matt, who was serving a sentence of 25 years to life for the murder and dismemberment of his former boss. With the assistance of a prison worker named Joyce "Tilly" Mitchell, who smuggled in supplies, Sweat and Matt managed to escape from the maximum-security prison in early June 2015.
After their escape, the two men were on the run for three weeks in the Adirondacks. Eventually, Matt was shot and killed by law enforcement, and two days later, Sweat was captured after being shot near the Canadian border. He was returned to state prison, where he remains today.
