Marcell Jacob Career
Lamont Marcell Jacobs has had a remarkable career in both long jump and sprinting. In 2016, he won the Italian Athletics Championships in long jump with a personal best of 8.07 meters. At the 2016 Italian U23 Championships, he jumped 8.48 meters, the best ever by an Italian, although it wasn't counted as a national record due to wind conditions.
Jacobs decided to focus exclusively on sprinting in 2019, moving away from long jump because of frequent injuries. By July 2019, he became the third-fastest Italian ever in the 100 meters, with a time of 10.03 seconds. He continued to improve, setting a new national record in the 60 meters at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
His career reached its peak at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Jacobs broke his own Italian record in the 100 meters heats and then set a new European record in the semi-finals. In the final, he surprised everyone by winning the gold medal with a time of 9.80 seconds, making history as Italy's first-ever Olympic champion in the event and the first European to win since 1992.
Jacobs also helped Italy win gold in the 4x100 meters relay at the same Olympics, setting a new Italian record. Since then, he has continued to set records and win gold medals at major championships, establishing himself as one of the top sprinters in the world.
