Helen was born in Ossett to Alfred and Gladys Wigglesworth and grew up in Morecambe, Lancashire. She was raised in a middle-class family and went to a private school. Tragically, her mother died in a hit-and-run accident in Brighton.

Helen lives in London. She married actor Michael Angelis in 1991 but they divorced in 2001 after his affairs. In 2013, she married Trevor Dawson, a primary school teacher from south London.
