Why is Rio Not on Disney Plus?

Rio is not on Disney Plus in the U.S. anymore. It was available before but got removed around April 2024. This happens sometimes because streaming services often add and remove titles based on different deals and agreements.

One big reason for Rio's removal is a deal that Fox made with HBO before Disney bought Fox. This deal means some movies, including Rio, might have to be shown on HBO instead of Disney Plus. These agreements can last for a while, so it might be some time before Rio is back on Disney Plus in the U.S. However in many countries Rio is available on Disney Plus.

If you really want to watch Rio, you might need to check other streaming services or wait until it becomes available on Disney Plus again.

Rio

"Rio" is a 2011 animated film produced by 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios. Leslie Mann, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, and Jemaine Clement provide the voices in this Carlos Saldanha-directed film. The narrative centers on Blu, a domesticated macaw owned by Spix, who travels to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, a wild female macaw.

They fall in love and have to flee from a gang led by the villainous cockatoo Nigel who wants to sell them on the black market. When Saldanha originally conceived the narrative in 2005, she had in mind macaws instead of penguins. 2009 saw the arrival of the principal voice performers.

The team went to Rio and conferred with a Bronx Zoo macaw specialist. "Rio" had its world debut in Rio de Janeiro on March 22, 2011, and went on general release on April 15. It was well received for its voice acting, music, and visuals and became a global hit, grossing over $484 million. "Rio 2," a follow-up, was released in 2014.

Rio Plot

In the film "Rio," the narrative begins at Moose Lake, Minnesota, with the fall of a baby bird named Blu from a vehicle. A rare male Spix's macaw is named Blu. Blu is found by Linda, a lovely woman, who looks after him. After fifteen years, Blu is unable to fly and resides with Linda. Blu and Linda receive an invitation to Rio de Janeiro from Túlio, an ornithologist, one day.

Túlio wants Blu, the only man of his type, to meet Jewel, the final female. Blu and Jewel meet in Rio, but smugglers kidnap them. Marcel is in charge of the smugglers, who intend to resell Blu and Jewel on the illicit market. Despite their escape, Blu and Jewel are still bound together.

They get help from a toucan named Rafael and meet two fun birds, Pedro and Nico. Nigel, an evil cockatoo, and a gang of marmosets try to capture them again. After attending a samba dance party, the birds fall in love, but the marmosets break up their moment. By tram, Blu, Jewel, and their companions managed to flee.

The boy who assisted in their capture, Fernando, feels horrible and offers to assist Linda and Túlio in their hunt for Blu and Jewel. During the Rio Carnival procession, the smugglers intend to remove the birds from the nation. Blu escapes and releases the other birds, even if Jewel and Blu are once more taken prisoner.

Jewel is harmed by Nigel's attack, but Blu intervenes to save her. After learning to fly for the first time, Blu rescues Jewel. Ultimately, Fernando is adopted by Linda and Túlio, and Blu and Jewel give birth to three young birds. They all live happily in a jungle sanctuary in Rio, while the smugglers get arrested.
