The game features a group of robot characters originally introduced in The Playroom, where they lived inside the DualShock 4 controller.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a 3D platform game where you control Astro Bot, a small robot, using the DualShock 4 controller in virtual reality (VR). You guide Astro through levels by moving your head to control the camera instead of using the controller's analog stick.

As Astro Bot's companion, you can interact with the environment by head-butting walls, dodging enemies, or even blowing into the VR headset's microphone to spread flower petals. Your main objective is to rescue Astro's scattered crew across five worlds and twenty levels, totaling 213 bots to save.

Each level hides eight lost robots that require careful exploration and precise jumping to find. The game uses 3D audio to help you locate these bots and hidden Space Chameleons.
