‘What Jennifer Did’ is really interesting because it has real videos of Jennifer talking to the police. At first, she tells them what happened when a violent crime happened in her house. Then, as the police find out more about the Pan family, they talk to Jennifer again to get more information. It takes a while for the police to understand everything, but when they do, it's really sad.

What Did Jennifer Pan Do?

Jennifer's childhood, according to Toronto Life, was full of pressure from her parents to do well in school and activities like piano and figure skating. Her dad especially didn't let her go to school events or date. As Jennifer got older, her grades slipped, and she started lying to her parents about how well she was doing in school.

As Jennifer got older, she started lying to her parents a lot. She even lied about going to university. Instead, she was actually working several jobs while pretending to be in class. Sometimes, she stayed with her friend Daniel Wong's family and told her parents she was just staying with a friend in the city during the week.

One time, she lied about having a volunteer job, but her parents found out she wasn't really working there. When her parents found out about all the lies, they got really upset. They told Jennifer she couldn't hang out with Daniel anymore and put strict rules on where she could go and who she could talk to.

In 2010, Pan planned to have her parents killed. She hired a person named Lenford Crawford to help her. Her father, Hann, survived the attack in November 2010, but he was seriously hurt and had to be put into a coma for three days. Pan talked to the police twice after the incident, claiming she was also a victim.

But when Hann woke up from the coma, what he said did not match what Pan had told the police. He remembered seeing Pan talking nicely to one of the intruders and moving around freely while they were in the house. The police talked to Pan again and then arrested her. They also arrested Wong, Crawford, and two other men involved in the break-in early in 2011.

Jennifer Pan’s Sentencing

In January 2015, Jennifer Pan, along with three others including Wong and Crawford, was given a punishment by the court. They were found guilty of serious crimes like first-degree murder and attempted murder. Their punishment was a life sentence in prison with no chance of getting out for 25 years. Another person involved, Eric Carty, had his trial separate from the others because his lawyer got sick. Sadly, he passed away in prison in 2018. During Jennifer's sentencing, her dad Hann didn't show up in court but sent a letter instead.

In May 2023, the Ontario Appeal Court said there needed to be a new trial for the first-degree murder charge. They said the judge didn't tell the jury they could consider other options like second-degree murder or manslaughter, according to CBC. Now, the case is with the Supreme Court of Canada, as reported by the Markham Economist & Sun. They'll decide whether to hear it again. If they don't, Jennifer Pan and the others involved might be able to ask for parole right away.
