Is Busch Apple Coming Back in 2024?

Anheuser-Busch has no plans to bring back Busch Light Apple. The company introduced Busch Light Peach in 2023, and its sales have been better than Apple, leading to a national release with TV commercials. However, not all fans are happy with the change.

Some find the Peach flavor too sugary and artificial compared to the original Apple. While some fans miss Busch Light Apple, they are not actively searching for replacements and have returned to other beers like Rolling Rock and Busch Light.

Anheuser-Busch employs over 19,000 people and runs 12 breweries and 9 aluminum can plants in the United States. Until December 2009, they also operated ten theme parks through their family entertainment division, Busch Entertainment Corporation.

Anheuser-Busch History

In 1852, George Schneider, a German American brewer, opened the Bavarian Brewery in South St. Louis. The brewery expanded in 1856 but faced financial problems, leading to its sale. In 1860, William D'Oench and Eberhard Anheuser bought the brewery, naming it E. Anheuser & Co. Adolphus Busch, who married Anheuser's daughter, joined the company in 1861 and bought D'Oench's share in 1869.

Innovations and Growth

Adolphus Busch introduced several innovations:

  • Pasteurization to keep beer fresh
  • Mechanical refrigeration and refrigerated railroad cars
  • Extensive beer bottling

By 1877, the company owned 40 refrigerated railroad cars, helping expand its distribution. The brewery's production increased from 31,500 barrels in 1875 to over 200,000 in 1881. To support transportation, Busch established the St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company and the Manufacturers Railway Company.

Introducing Budweiser

In 1876, Busch introduced Budweiser, inspired by European pilsner beers. Budweiser became the first national beer brand in the U.S. In 1879, the company was renamed Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association, with Busch becoming president in 1880.

Marketing and Expansion

In the 1880s and 1890s, Busch used various marketing tactics, including giveaways like bottle openers and prints. One popular giveaway was the "Custer's Last Fight" print. The company introduced Michelob, a "super-premium" brand, in 1896. By 1907, Anheuser-Busch produced nearly 1.6 million barrels of beer. To combat Prohibition, they produced non-alcoholic beverages like Bevo.

Surviving Prohibition

During Prohibition, Anheuser-Busch sold products like brewer's yeast, malt extract, and Bevo to survive. After Adolphus Busch's death in 1913, his son August Anheuser Busch Sr. led the company, building upscale restaurants to improve the respectability of drinking.

Post-Prohibition Growth

In 1957, Anheuser-Busch became the largest U.S. brewer. In 1981, they established Anheuser-Busch International, Inc., for international operations. By 2008, they operated 15 breweries internationally.

Acquisition by InBev

In 2008, InBev made a $46 billion offer to buy Anheuser-Busch. Despite initial resistance, a deal was reached in July 2008. The merger created Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer. Post-merger, AB InBev focused on cost-cutting and reducing debt, leading to significant changes in the company's operations and employee benefits.
