George Stephanopoulos moved to the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Orange High School in Pepper Pike in 1978. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Columbia University in 1982, graduating summa cum laude and as the class salutatorian.

At Columbia, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, and worked as a sports broadcaster for the university's radio station, WKCR-FM. George Stephanopoulos began his career in Washington, D.C., working as an aide to Congressman Ed Feighan. He later became Feighan's chief of staff. In 1988, he joined Michael Dukakis's presidential campaign and later worked for Dick Gephardt in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Stephanopoulos then played a key role in Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and served in his administration, focusing on policy and strategy. He left the White House in 1996 and wrote a bestselling memoir, detailing his experiences and challenges during his time there.

After leaving the White House, George Stephanopoulos joined ABC News as a political analyst and correspondent. He became the host of This Week in September 2002 and was named "Chief Washington Correspondent" in December 2005. Stephanopoulos co-moderated the final Democratic presidential debate in 2008 and launched a political blog called George's Bottom Line.
