No, Godzilla Minus One is not a sequel. It's a standalone film set in post-war Japan and is separate from any American Godzilla movies or previous films made by Toho Studios. This movie was premiered in Japan on November 3, 2023, and was released in North America on December 1. It made almost $116 million worldwide on a $10-12 million budget, becoming the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2023 and the most successful Japanese Godzilla film. The movie received many awards, including eight wins at the Japan Academy Film Prize and Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.
Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese kaiju film directed by Takashi Yamazaki, produced by Toho Studios and Robot Communications. It's the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise and the fifth in the Reiwa era. The movie stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and others, and is set in postwar Japan. It follows a former kamikaze pilot dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering Godzilla.
Godzilla Minus One Plot
During World War II, kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima encounters Godzilla on Odo Island but fails to stop it. He returns home to Tokyo, haunted by the destruction. Godzilla, empowered by nuclear tests, heads towards Japan, causing devastation. Shikishima joins a plan to destroy Godzilla using a suicide attack while others devise a different plan. As Godzilla approaches, the crew prepares for the final showdown.
Godzilla Minus One Ending
In the end, Shikishima crashes his plane into Godzilla's mouth, destroying its head and causing its body to tear apart. He ejects safely, urging Tachibana to let go of guilt. Shikishima reunites with Noriko, who survived, but Godzilla's flesh begins to regenerate as it sinks into the ocean.
