This is a big change from the book "Fire and Blood," where Hugh is just said to be the illegitimate son of a blacksmith.

Who is Hugh Hammer?
Hugh Hammer, also called Hugh the Hammer or Hard Hugh, is a character from A Song of Ice and Fire and its TV show House of the Dragon. He is a blacksmith's illegitimate son with Valyrian heritage who plays a key role in the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Initially, Hugh supported Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and rode a dragon named Vermithor. But he later betrayed Rhaenyra and joined the Greens, who backed King Aegon II Targaryen. Hugh became infamous for burning the town of Tumbleton and killing many people there, alongside his ally Ulf White.
Known for his great strength and combat skills, Hugh also had a knack for manipulation. He wanted to become king but did not succeed. In the TV show, he is played by Kieran Bew.

Viserys I Targaryen, known as Viserys the Peaceful, was the fifth king of the Targaryen dynasty to rule the Seven Kingdoms in the fictional world of Westeros, as depicted in George R.R. Martin's series and the TV show House of the Dragon. Born between 63 and 72 AC (After Conquest) in the Red Keep of King's Landing, he reigned from 103 AC until he died in 132 AC. He was the grandson of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the son of Baelon Targaryen, and the father of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen.
Viserys I is remembered for his attempts to maintain peace and uphold the prosperity of his grandfather's reign. His rule was marked by internal family strife over succession and the challenges of ruling a realm in transition. He is portrayed by Paddy Considine in House of the Dragon.
House Of the Dragons
House of the Dragon is an American TV show created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. It's a prequel to "Game of Thrones" and the second show in Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. The show is based on Martin's 2018 book "Fire & Blood" and is set about 100 years after the Targaryen conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, nearly 200 years before "Game of Thrones," and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen is born. It tells the story of the Targaryen family’s decline and the civil war called the "Dance of the Dragons."
The show was officially ordered in October 2019. Casting started in July 2020, and filming began in April 2021 in the UK. "House of the Dragon" premiered on August 21, 2022, with ten episodes in its first season. It was quickly renewed for a second season. Miguel Sapochnik, who co-managed the first season, left after it, so Ryan Condal became the sole showrunner for the second season, which premiered on June 16, 2024, with eight episodes. The show was also renewed for a third season in June 2024.
The first season was well-received for its characters, special effects, writing, and music by Ramin Djawadi, but it had some criticism for its pacing and dark lighting. The premiere was a big hit, with over 10 million viewers, making it HBO's biggest debut. The show won Best Television Series – Drama at the Golden Globe Awards, and Emma D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress.
