Captain Gopinath was born on November 13, 1951, in a small village in Karnataka. He graduated from the Indian Military Academy and fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. He left the Indian Army early, at the age of 28, and experimented with a number of ventures, including dairy farming, hotel management, and bike dealerships.

But the creation of Air Deccan in 2003 was his greatest accomplishment. Offering tickets at far lower costs than other airlines, this was India's first low-cost carrier. His goal was to make air travel accessible to all Indians, and his creative strategy became well-liked very rapidly.

In 2007, Captain Gopinath sold Air Deccan to Vijay Mallya due to financial difficulties, despite the company's early success. Kingfisher Airlines and Air Deccan later amalgamated. "Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey," written by Captain Gopinath, details his experiences.
