In 1987, Sarina Wiegman joined KFC '71 and won the KNVB Cup that same year. In 1988, while in China, she met USWNT coach Anson Dorrance, who invited her to study at the University of North Carolina. She played for the North Carolina Tar Heels and won the NCAA championship in 1989. After returning to the Netherlands, she worked as a physical education teacher while playing football. Wiegman won two Dutch championships with Ter Leede before retiring in 2003 due to pregnancy.
