Is Twisters Based on a True Story?

Twisters isn’t based on a true story, but it uses real tornado science for inspiration. The film includes storm scenes and tornadoes created with special effects and digital technology, based on real tornado footage and data.

While the characters and plot are made up, the movie tries to show realistic storm conditions and what we know about tornadoes. So, it is a fictional story with real science mixed in(Source: The Oklahoman).

Twisters Movie 2024

Twisters is a 2024 disaster movie directed by Lee Isaac Chung. It’s a new story set in the same world as Twister (1996). The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane.

The plot follows storm chasers who try to weaken tornadoes by shooting barrels filled with a special solution into them. The movie premiered in London on July 8, 2024, and came out in theaters worldwide on July 10, with a U.S. release on July 19. It has been well-received by critics and has earned $134 million globally.

Twisters Plot

Kate Carter, a meteorologist and former storm chaser, works with Javi and other storm chasers in Oklahoma to test a new system designed to weaken tornadoes. They use barrels of special solution to try to make tornadoes less intense. Their mission goes wrong when a tornado grows into a powerful EF5, leading to the deaths of Kate's team members Addy, Praveen, and Jeb. Kate and Javi are the only survivors.

Five years later, Kate is working in New York City. Javi invites her to join his team, Storm Par, for a week to test their new tornado scanner. Kate agrees after seeing news of a tornado destroying a town. When they arrive in Oklahoma, they meet Tyler Owens, a famous storm chaser, and investor Marshall Riggs, who profits from tornado-damaged land.

The team chases an EF1 tornado and then an EF3 tornado. Kate has a panic attack and can't help with the scanner, so she drives away. They later try to help with recovery efforts in a town hit by a tornado. Kate learns that Tyler’s team helps tornado victims with money from their merchandise, while Riggs is just making money off the disaster.

Tyler invites Kate to a rodeo, and they start to get closer. When an EF4 tornado hits, Kate and Javi argue about Riggs and Kate goes to her mother’s farm. Tyler follows her and convinces her to try the experiment again with a new method. They add silver iodide to their solution and track a new tornado.

As the tornado approaches El Reno and becomes a dangerous EF5, Kate and her team work to evacuate people. In a dramatic scene, Kate drives a truck into the tornado to release the solution. The tornado weakens, and the team saves everyone.

In the end, Kate and Tyler decide to continue their work together. The film ends with them heading out to chase a new storm, showing their renewed partnership and commitment.
