Who is Jhene Aiko?
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo, born on March 16, 1988, is an American R&B singer-songwriter and rapper from Los Angeles, California. She started her music career in 2002, singing backup and appearing in music videos for the R&B group B2K.
Initially promoted as the "cousin" of B2K's Lil' Fizz to build her own fanbase, though they aren't actually related. Her first album, planned for release in 2003 with Epic Records, was delayed when she chose to focus on her education instead.
In March 2011, Aiko returned to music with a mixtape called Sailing Soul(s). Later that year, she signed with producer No I.D.'s label ARTium Recordings, a part of Def Jam Recordings. Her breakthrough came when she featured on Big Sean's song "Beware" with Lil Wayne in 2013, her first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
She released her debut EP, Sail Out, in November 2013, featuring hits like "Bed Peace" and "The Worst". Her albums Souled Out (2014), Trip (2017), and Chilombo (2020) have also been well-received, with Chilombo earning her three Grammy nominations.
Jhene Aiko Career
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo was born on March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in South Los Angeles until her family's home burned down when she was seven. After that, they moved near Slauson Avenue, where she was homeschooled until high school.
Aiko fondly refers to her neighborhood as "Slauson Hills". Her parents, Christina Yamamoto and pediatrician Karamo Chilombo (also known as Gregory Wycliff Barnes), are divorced. She has seven siblings, with both full and half-siblings from both sides of her family. Her older sister, Mila J, is also an R&B singer.
Aiko's heritage is diverse: her mother is of Spanish, Dominican, and Japanese descent, while her father has Native American, African-American, and German-Jewish roots. Her maternal grandfather was Japanese, and her maternal grandmother was Dominican.
Aiko once discussed her mixed background on Twitter, explaining her genetic makeup includes Asian, African, and European ancestry. She emphasized her identity as human and valued everyone as family, regardless of perceptions about her background.
