New Edition
New Edition is an American R&B/pop group from Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 1978 by Bobby Brown. They named themselves to be a new version of the Jackson 5. They became very popular in the 1980s and are seen as a model for modern boy bands.
The original members were Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, and Ralph Tresvant. Bobby Brown left in late 1985 to start a solo career, and the group continued with just four members for one album. In 1987, Johnny Gill joined the group.
Some of their early hits are "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "Mr. Telephone Man." Ralph Tresvant was the main singer for most of their songs. In 1990, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant released solo albums, and Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe formed the trio Bell Biv DeVoe. The group didn't work together for a while in the early 1990s.
