Originally slated for release in 2020, Blue Sky Studios produced the film. However, the movie was postponed and nearly scrapped after Disney acquired Blue Sky, and the studio dissolved in 2021. Thank goodness, Annapurna Pictures gave it new life, and Netflix ultimately handled distribution.

The movie debuted on June 14, 2023, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. It debuted in theaters on June 23, and on June 30 it was available on Netflix. With positive reviews, Nimona even received an Academy Award, Critics' Choice, and Annie Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Nimona Plot

In Nimona, the kingdom is protected by the Institute for Elite Knights, founded by the legendary heroine Gloreth. Once she vanquished the "Great Black Monster," a massive wall encircled the kingdom. Queen Valerin's new edict permitting anybody to be a hero makes Ballister Boldheart the first commoner to become a knight.

Ballister unintentionally murders the Queen with a laser blast from his sword during his knighthood ceremony. Ballister becomes a fugitive after his boyfriend Ambrosius Goldenloin, who is crushed, disarms him.

Now that he's on the run, Ballister meets the shape-shifting misfit Nimona. She resolves to assist him in clearing his record. They learn that Ballister was set up for the Queen's murder by the Institute's director. When Nimona's past as the Great Black Monster is revealed, the Director is exposed by Nimona and Ballister, but she also rallies the kingdom against them.

Nimona leaves, feeling deceived. Ballister stops her just as she is about to commit herself and apologizes. Nimona sacrifices herself in the last battle by changing into a massive phoenix to stop the Director. Beyond the wall is revealed by the explosion to be a stunning valley. Later on, Nimona survives, and Ballister discovers that the kingdom has undergone positive development.
