The team's ownership has always been in the Rooney family. They were originally called the Pittsburgh Pirates, named after the baseball team. People used to call them the "Rooneymen" to tell them apart from the baseball team. Dan Rooney owned the team for a long time until he passed away in 2017. His son, Art Rooney II, now runs things.
