Here is the right answer to the crossword clue Saint Petersburg, Once NYT featured in the NYT puzzle. The correct answer to this clue is PETROAD.
Saint Petersburg, a major city in Russia, was once known as Petrograd. The name change occurred during World War I. Originally named Saint Petersburg when it was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, the name was changed to Petrograd in 1914. This change was largely due to anti-German sentiment during the war, as the original name sounded too German.
"Petrograd" means "Peter's City" in Russian. The city retained this name until 1924, when it was renamed Leningrad following the death of Vladimir Lenin. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the city reverted to its original name, Saint Petersburg.
