Sophie’s family also said, "Sophie liked to share her feelings through music, not words. We think it’s right to share the music she wanted to release." The album will have songs with some of Sophie’s favorite collaborators, like Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, who are on the new single “Reason Why” that came out this week.

Posthumous Meaning

The word "posthumous" means something that happens or is given after a person has died. In the case of Sophie, it means her final album is being released after her death. Sophie passed away in 2021, but her family and record labels decided to share the new music she almost finished before she died. So, when we say Sophie’s album is being released "posthumously," it means the album is coming out after she is no longer alive. This way, fans can still enjoy and connect with her music even though she is not here anymore.

Three years later, on June 21, 2024, a video appeared on Sophie's YouTube channel teasing a big announcement for the following Monday. That day, her lead single "Reason Why," featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, was released, along with news of the posthumous self-titled album scheduled for September release.

Sophie's family shared their feelings about the album on Instagram, stating, "When we began this project, we reached out to Sophie's close friends who understood her vision. We wrote, 'The music Sophie left us brings us comfort; it’s a precious gift as we move forward, keeping Sophie at the heart of our lives.'

Sophie rarely spoke about her personal life, preferring to express herself through her music. It feels right to share the music she wanted to release, believing everyone can connect with her in the form she loved most. Sophie poured her entire self into her music, and it’s where her spirit will forever reside."
