The namesake of ESPN's Courage Award is Arthur Ashe. Arthur Ashe was a professional tennis player who achieved numerous milestones in his career, including being the first African American male to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. Arthur Ashe contracted HIV through a blood transfusion during heart surgery in the early 1980s and subsequently became an advocate for AIDS awareness and research.
