What is the Morning Shed Trend on TikTok?
The Morning Shed is the latest trend on TikTok. It involves starting the day by shedding layers of beauty products that were applied before going to bed. This trend is said to improve the quality of the skin and sleep but it is not known how much it is true.
The idea behind the trend is “the uglier you go to bed, the prettier you wake up.” The Morning Shed encourages people to apply products such as skin care serums, moisturizing patches, face masks, mouthguards, and eye masks to look fresh and glowy. Source: Glamour

The trend has come from users who film themselves performing their evening bedtime routines. People apply moisturizing eye patches, sleep with a mouth guard, go for LED red light therapy or even tape their mouths.
As per experts, the trend could cause skin irritation and disrupt sleep. If you are trying it for yourself, then its best to test the products first.
For hair, they incorporate heatless curls, and a silk bonnet to prevent frizz and end the routine by applying a chin strap to define the face and essential oils to help them fall asleep. They film the morning reveal of glowing skin and perfectly styled hair, with users claiming that the nighttime routine saves time in the morning.
Is The Morning Shed Trend Worth It?
Many creators apply layers of multiple face and eye treatments, and sleep with sheet masks on their face. Expert say that the masks are meant for short-term use, hence keeping them overnight might tap out all the benefits after a certain point.
However other experts also say that the “morning shed” trend can provide skin benefits, but the effectiveness will vary by product and skin type, says Lesley. She said, ‘During sleep, the skin undergoes natural repair, making it ideal for treatments. It leverages natural repair processes during sleep to boost skin and hair health.
‘With carefully selected products and a balanced approach, it can offer substantial beauty benefits. But individuals should monitor their skin’s responses and adjust routines to avoid potential drawbacks.’
But Lesley also notes that, ‘The effectiveness of these routines depends on consistency and appropriate product selection. Overuse or incorrect combinations can cause irritation or sensitivity. It’s crucial to use non-comedogenic products suitable for overnight use to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.’
Does It Damage Skin?
The morning shed routine has many positive impacts on the skin. But it can also have a negative impact usually when too much product is used. ‘Using too many products at once can overwhelm the skin, leading to congestion and breakouts,’ says Lesley. ‘The skin’s barrier has limits and excess active ingredients can cause irritation or sensitivity, especially in already-sensitive skin. Overusing potent ingredients can also compromise the skin’s barrier, increasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and making the skin more vulnerable to dryness, irritation, and infections.’
Experts say that we should be aware of which products and ingredients we are using on our skin. ‘Incompatible ingredients can reduce the effectiveness of specific products or cause adverse reactions,’ Lesley warns. ‘For example, mixing retinol with strong acids might result in dryness and irritation. It’s crucial to understand ingredient interactions.’
