The series began with a two-hour TV movie in October 2013. In the movie, Poppy Drayton plays Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher, and Stephen Amell plays Wynn Delaney, a police officer. In the TV series, Erin Krakow stars as Elizabeth, along with a large cast.

Hallmark renewed the show for a sixth season on March 21, 2018. It started with a two-hour Christmas special in December and was supposed to continue in February 2019. However, due to the 2019 college admissions scandal involving Lori Loughlin, the season was delayed and edited, then resumed in May and ended in June.

The series was renewed for an eleventh season, which premiered on April 7, 2024. It was also renewed for a twelfth season, set to start production in July 2024.
