Cody began his journey at Chadron State by redshirting his first season. Despite this, he made a strong impression, earning the Offensive Service Team MVP and showcasing his talent during the annual spring game.
He took advantage of his opportunities, rushing for 273 yards on just 33 carries, averaging an impressive 8.3 yards per carry. His performance led to him being recognized as the strongest player (pound-for-pound) on the team during the spring of 2014.
In his sophomore season, Cody continued to excel, finishing second on the team with 83 carries for 540 yards. He was named to the All-Conference First Team as a kick returner, accumulating 631 yards on 22 returns. With a total of 1,211 all-purpose yards, he rushed for four touchdowns and was honored as an Omaha World-Herald All-Star. Notably, he also broke Danny Woodhead’s shuttle drill record.
Despite battling injuries, Cody led the team with an average of 6.0 yards per carry. He shone as a kick returner, averaging 28.8 yards per attempt and recording a season-long kickoff return of 47 yards during a win against Black Hills State. He finished the season with an impressive average of 102.4 all-purpose yards per game.
Before college, Cody established himself as a standout player in high school. He rushed for 1,260 yards and scored 21 touchdowns in his senior season, earning accolades as his league's Offensive Player of the Year. He also received all-county and all-league honors and ran for over 700 yards as a junior. In addition to his on-field success, Cody demonstrated strength and athleticism, bench pressing 310 pounds and being a member of his high school’s 1,200-pound club.
