Patterson started doing comedy in 1996 after a dare. He jokes about daily life and what happens during shows. Before that, he went to college and then worked in advertising while doing comedy on the side.In 1996, Patterson lost his advertising job and began doing comedy full-time. He joined Funny Business as an opening act.

In 2004, he appeared at Just for Laughs gala and the Edinburgh Festival. Then in 2006, he hosted the Just for Laughs Road Tour in Ontario.
In 2007, Patterson started hosting CBC Radio One's The Debaters and turned down Last Comic Standing to keep a local show commitment. He performed at Just for Laughs again in 2010, impressing Steve Martin. The Debaters also aired on CBC Television in 2011. Patterson received nominations and awards for his comedy performances, and his debut novel was published in 2016.
