Why is 'Pokémon' Leaving Netflix?

The Pokémon series is leaving Netflix in September 2024 because Netflix's agreement to stream these shows has ended. Although Netflix had exclusive rights to stream new Pokémon episodes in the U.S., including "Pokémon Journeys," "Pokémon Master Journeys," "Pokémon Ultimate Journeys," and "Pokémon: To Be A Pokémon Masters: Ultimate Journeys," this agreement was only for a limited time.

Netflix often rotates its content, and it’s common for long-running shows like Pokémon to be available for only a certain period. Even though some Pokémon series might stay on Netflix or return later if a new agreement is made, the current arrangement for these specific titles is ending. This means viewers will need to find other ways to watch these Pokémon episodes starting in September.

Pokémon

The series is divided into eight main parts in Japan, each based on a different Pokémon video game. Internationally, these parts are shown as 26 seasons. The original series follows a young Pokémon trainer named Ash Ketchum, who travels with his Pokémon partner Pikachu and other characters. Ash's goal is to become a "Pokémon Master" by participating in Pokémon battles and tournaments. By the 26th season, the focus shifts to new characters, Liko and Roy.

Besides the main series, there are spin-off shows like Pokémon Chronicles and various live-action programs related to Pokémon. The Pokémon anime is known for making anime popular worldwide, especially in the U.S. and Asia. It's one of the most successful video game adaptations ever, with over 1,200 episodes shown in 192 countries and widely watched on platforms like Netflix.

In his latest adventure, Ash competes in the World Coronation Series and becomes the new Monarch by defeating Leon, the Champion of the Galar Region. With his goals accomplished, Ash and his friend Goh part ways, and Ash continues his journey with Pikachu to meet new Pokémon and pursue his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master.
