Is the Lazarus Project Based on a True Story?

The Lazarus Project isn't based on a true story; it's entirely fictional. The novel, written by Aleksandar Hemon and published in 2008, is inspired by historical events but is not a factual account. It tells a story that includes elements based on the real-life death of Lazarus Averbuch, a young Jewish immigrant who was shot by a police officer in Chicago in 1908.

However, the book uses this historical event as a backdrop for a fictional narrative. So, while it draws on real events, the story itself is created by the author and is not a true historical record.
