A Nintendo Switch version was later released in September 2018. Updated versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were launched in February 2024, accompanied by an update that introduced rollback netcode for these platforms as well as Windows.

In Dragon Ball FighterZ, players assemble a team of three characters, each with a unique assist, to engage in battles against AI or human opponents who also field their own trio of fighters. The game was well-received by critics, who praised its fighting mechanics, diverse character roster, stunning visuals, engaging story mode, and memorable music.

However, some reviewers noted issues with its online features. Despite this criticism, Dragon Ball FighterZ proved to be a commercial hit, achieving global sales of 10 million copies by May 2023.

Players choose three characters from the Dragon Ball universe to form a team. One character is controlled while others can be swapped in and called upon for assists, enabling combined attacks. To win, all three of an opponent's characters must be defeated, or the least damaged team wins if time runs out.

Universal moves include the Vanish Attack for quick movement and combo extensions, Dragon Rush for breaking guards, Super Dash for homing attacks, and Ki Charge to boost energy. Special features include the Shenron System, where gathering Dragon Balls grants wishes like reviving allies or gaining power boosts.

Season 3 introduced customizable Assist types and enhanced abilities when team members are down.

Dragon Ball Fighterz Plot

Dragon Ball FighterZ's storyline is set between the "Universe 6" and "Future Trunks" sagas from Dragon Ball Super. The main villain, Android 21, was originally a human who turned into an android by the Red Ribbon Army, using her son as a model for Android 16.

She awakens and revives villains like Frieza and Cell using the Dragon Balls, then seals away Earth's strongest warriors' powers and souls. To control the monster within her, she and Android 16 create a system where a human soul (the player) can possess fighters.

In the Super Warrior Arc, Goku and the Z Fighters confront clones and discover 21's schemes. They ally with former enemies to stop her, culminating in a battle on the Sacred World of the Kai where they defeat 21. In the Enemy Warrior Arc, the player inhabits Frieza and works with villains and heroes to defeat 21.

Finally, in the Android 21 Arc, the player's soul is linked with Android 18 to stop 21's rampage, leading to a final showdown where both versions of 21 are defeated, restoring peace.
