Additionally, Lynch was nominated for Best Director for Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001). In 2020, he was honored with an Honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement at the Governors Awards. His accolades extend to the Cannes Film Festival, where he won the prestigious Palme d’Or for Wild at Heart (1990) and received the Best Director award for Mulholland Drive in 2001.

In August 2024, Lynch disclosed that he had been diagnosed with emphysema, a condition he attributed to years of smoking. This health issue prevented him from directing in person. He revealed that a Netflix project, tentatively titled Wisteria or Unrecorded Night, had been canceled, though he expressed a desire to see his unproduced works, Antelope Don’t Run No More and Snootworld, realized. Despite these setbacks, Lynch assured fans he was in good health, continued working on existing projects as much as possible, and had no intention of retiring.

On January 16, 2025, Lynch's official Facebook page announced his passing, just four days before what would have been his 79th birthday. His death marked the end of a remarkable era for a creative force who left an indelible mark on cinema, art, and culture.
