The region of Ala Mhigo was taken over by the Garlean Empire twenty years ago. Eorzea’s history includes peaceful "Astral" eras and troubled "Umbral" eras caused by major disasters.

The Seventh Umbral Calamity was caused by the Garlean Empire's attempt to use the moon Dalamud as a weapon. Despite the Alliance’s efforts to stop it, Dalamud crashed and released the primal dragon Bahamut, causing widespread destruction. The adventurers were sent through time to prepare for future battles while the Empire faced its own internal crisis.
