Who is Sammy Sosa?
Samuel Peralta Sosa, born on November 12, 1968, is a retired baseball player from the Dominican Republic. He played as a right fielder for 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly with the Chicago Cubs. Before joining the Cubs in 1992, he played for the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox. Sosa became one of the best hitters, hitting his 400th home run faster than anyone in the National League. He is one of only nine players in MLB history to hit 600 home runs.
In 1998, Sosa became famous with Mark McGwire for trying to break Roger Maris' home run record. Sosa was a 7-time All-Star with the Cubs and set many team records. He also played for the Baltimore Orioles and returned to the Rangers, where he hit his 600th home run, becoming the fifth player to do so.
Sosa is second in home runs among foreign-born players and one of only three National League players since 1900 to have 160 RBIs in one season (2001). He is the only player to hit 60 or more home runs in three different seasons (1998, 1999, and 2001), even though he didn't lead the league in those years. He did lead the league with 50 home runs in 2000 and 49 in 2002.
