Novak Djokovic’s Surgeon Gives Injury Update

Novak Djokovic has received a discouraging injury update from his surgeon ahead of Wimbledon. The 37-year-old underwent surgery last week after tearing the medial meniscus in his right knee during a grueling fourth-round victory over Francisco Cerundolo at the French Open.

Following a scan, Djokovic withdrew from the tournament, allowing Jannik Sinner to claim the world number one ranking. Any lingering hopes Djokovic had of competing at Wimbledon, starting on July 1, have been dampened by his surgeon, Antoana Geromete, who provided a detailed assessment of the injury and the recovery process.

Novak Djokovic Injury Update

With Carlos Alcaraz in the spotlight recently, Novak Djokovic has somewhat faded from the tennis world's attention. The former World No. 1 has been absent from the courts since his knee injury forced him to withdraw from the French Open. Fans and tennis enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating his comeback. However, according to an update from Djokovic’s doctor on Monday, it seems they will have to wait a bit longer.

Novak Djokovic endured several slips and falls during his thrilling five-set match against Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round. Despite winning the match, he injured his knee in one of the falls and attributed it to the subpar surface conditions, citing an uneven distribution of clay on both sides of the court.

Due to this injury, Djokovic had to withdraw from his quarter-final match against Casper Ruud. While the tournament continued, Djokovic sought treatment for his injured knee. Now, his doctor has provided a discouraging update about the 37-year-old Serbian player in an interview with French publication L’Equipe.

Antoine Gerometta disclosed that Djokovic's injury is serious enough to keep him off the court for an extended period. Consequently, the 24-time Grand Slam champion is unlikely to compete at Wimbledon in three weeks.

This news arrives just days after Djokovic announced on X that his surgery was successful and expressed optimism about returning to the sport he loves very soon. The doctor's recent update has therefore come as a shock to tennis fans.

Many of Djokovic’s fans, already frustrated with French Open officials for their poor management, became even angrier upon learning that the officials had failed to address Djokovic's complaints. They were particularly upset given that the slippery court conditions were responsible for his injury.

When Will Novak Djokovic Return?

The exact date of Novak Djokovic's return to competitive tennis remains unclear. He underwent surgery in late May to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. While the surgery was successful, typical recovery timelines for this type of injury suggest a return to top-level competition could take 3-6 months. This throws participation in Wimbledon, starting at the end of June, into serious doubt. The longer end of the recovery window might allow him to compete in the Paris Olympics starting in late July, but it could be a close call. Ultimately, we'll have to wait for an official update from Djokovic himself to know for sure when he'll be gracing the court again.
