Bella and Marta Karolyi
Bela and Marta Karolyi are a famous couple in gymnastics. They first gained fame with their star gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who scored a perfect 10 at the 1976 Olympics. After disagreements with Romanian officials, the Karolyis moved to the United States in 1981 and began coaching in Houston.
Over the years, they helped many gymnasts become Olympic champions and played a key role in Team USA's first gold medal in gymnastics in 1996. However, their legacy became controversial due to allegations of abuse. Former athletes accused them of harsh training methods, including withholding food and water and physical punishment. There were also claims that Larry Nassar abused gymnasts at their training camp.
Despite these allegations, the Karolyis deny any wrongdoing. They said they were unaware of Nassar's actions until he was dismissed from USA Gymnastics in 2015. They also faced legal battles after the sale of their training facility, Karolyi Ranch, fell through due to the scandal. Bela retired from coaching in 2001, while Marta stepped away from USA Gymnastics after the 2016 Olympics. They currently live in Romania.
