In a desperate bid to protect them, Gyomei fought the demon with his bare hands, managing to fend it off until sunrise, when it perished. However, his heroism was misunderstood. When authorities arrived, they wrongly accused Gyomei of murdering the children and imprisoned him.

Fortunately, Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, saw Gyomei's potential and spared him from execution. Recognizing his immense strength and determination, Ubuyashiki recruited Gyomei into the Demon Slayer Corps. Gyomei's rise within the corps was swift.
